'As late as 1999, women who succeeded in science were called 'exceptional' as if it were unusual for them to be so bright. They were exceptional, not because they could succeed at science but because of all they accomplished despite the hurdles.' - Excerpt from "The Exceptions"

In 1999, molecular geneticist and cancer researcher Nancy Hopkins, PhD, led a group of 16 women on the MIT faculty in a campaign that prompted MIT to make the historic admission that it had long discriminated against its female scientists.

On behalf of the Boston Children's Book Club, join us in Folkman Auditorium or online for a special panel discussion with Kate Zernike, the Pulitzer-winning journalist who first broke the story, then chronicled it in her book, “The Exceptions: Nancy Hopkins, MIT, and the Fight for Women in Science.” Nancy Hopkins and our other panelists are listed below.
