For most first- and-second year medical students, the chance to conduct real-world experiments, network with world-class researchers, and learn from Harvard faculty is only a dream. This summer, nine medical students have the opportunity to live that dream. This summer’s annual cohort of students won’t be spending this summer in their hometowns; instead, they’re currently paired with mentors across Harvard Medical School (HMS), learning firsthand the ins and outs of conducting clinical and translational research.

On Monday, June 19, Harvard tabled at the 13th annual Juneteenth Emancipation Observance in Roxbury, organized by the Boston Juneteenth Committee and National Center of Afro-American Artists. Featuring food, music, a parade, and activities for all ages, the event had over 500 attendees.

On Sunday, May 21, Joan Reede, MD, MS, MPH, MBA, the dean for diversity and community partnerships at Harvard Medical School, served as commencement speaker for the Georgetown University School of Medicine class of 2023.

When Shirley Marks entered Harvard Medical School as a student in 1969, she was not only the first Black woman to be accepted to the School in decades — and only the second Black woman ever accepted — she was part of a broader, diverse cohort of students entering that year who changed the face of medicine.
