Research Mentor Training Program, University of Wisconsin – Madison

The University of Wisconsin – Madison with support from Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the National Science Foundation developed an online Research Mentor Training Program. The mentor training program offers resources and training modules and materials on the following core competencies of mentoring.  

  • Establishing expectations
  • Maintaining effective communication
  • Assessing understanding
  • Fostering independence
  • Addressing diversity
  • Dealing with research ethics


The training program is free of charge and offers the ability to read and learn at your own pace. You can register here for the online Research Mentor Training Program. Each module offers cases that document individual scenarios, solutions, and tools, which are discussed in detail. All of the research mentor training materials and resources on this website can be downloaded as complete seminar curricula, complete workshops or individual components and documents.
