Intersex Advocacy Leads to Change

A story on the movement by intersex advocates to end nonconsensual surgeries on intersex infants and youth. NBC writes that after years of pressure from intersex leaders, health professional associations and hospitals are starting to come out against this harmful practice. Any early surgery performed on a child’s genitals is “playing a guessing game” as to what they will need or want in the future, says GLMA Board member Frances Grimstad, MD, MS.

Since 2016, GLMA has advocated for delay of any medically unnecessary surgical or medical interventions for intersex infants and youth until the patient can provide meaningful consent to these interventions. Read GLMA’s policy statement here.
