Community Engagement and Education
Middle School Programs
For Middle School Students—Explorations is a one-day program for selected Boston and Cambridge public middle schools that takes place in the fall. Approximately 250 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are hosted by Harvard faculty and research associates for a day of presentations, panel discussions about educational paths, and the pairing of individual students with researchers for laboratory activities.
For Boston and Cambridge 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students–Reflection in Action is the spring component of Explorations. This day-long program offers students the opportunity to generate a vision for change by weaving together the themes of heart, lung, and blood diseases, health, health disparities, community engagement, and creative expression to promote positive change in their community. Through visual, written, and performing arts, students identify pressing health care needs that are currently overlooked in today's media, and provide a proactive approach to healthy living that focuses on personal empowerment, access and awareness, and good health habits.
