Harvard Medical School Launches “Health Care for Individuals with Diverse Sexual Orientation, Gender Expression, and Sex Development: A Clinical and Scholarly Elective

This advanced elective is a four-week multi-disciplinary clinical and scholarly experience that trains medical students to provide high-quality, patient-care to people who are LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning), Gender Nonconforming, or Born with DSD (Differences of Sex Development). While there will be an emphasis on working with youth, clinical exposure and education on working with LGBTQ adults will also be included to teach students the common health issues for LGBTQ people that occur across the lifespan.

Medical students must have completed their pre-clinical training and most of their required core clinical rotation requirements before applying for the elective. Clinical sites include: Boston Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Medical Center, Cambridge Health Alliance, Fenway Health, and Greater Lawrence Family Health Center.

This first-ever elective at Harvard Medical School is led by Course Director Robert Kitts MD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Boston Children’s Hospital and Co-Directors: Joseph Baker MD, MPH, Fenway Health; Scott Hadland MD, Boston Children’s Hospital; Peter Hunt PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychology, Boston Children’s Hospital; and Jennifer Potter, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital.

The elective uses the educational framework, recommendations and learning objectives the AAMC (http://offers.aamc.org/lgbt-dsd-health) published in 2014. These objectives were developed for trainees to acquire the knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to provide sensitive and appropriate care to individuals with diverse sexual orientation, gender expression and sex development.

Jennifer Potter, MD, Course Co-Director and Faculty Advisor to the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine’s LGBTQ student group, said: “Grounded by the AAMC’s Professional Competencies to Care for People Who Are LGBT, Gender Nonconforming, and/or Born with DSD, this elective seeks to enhance the ability of medical students to provide sensitive and appropriate care to these underserved populations.” 

Medical students will have exposure to inter-professional teams composed of physicians, psychologists, social workers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and others in multiple clinical settings as related to LGBTQ healthcare, including: OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Urology, Women’s Health, and the Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) and the Gender Management Service (GeMS). There will be direct supervision of clinical work by faculty attendings and fellows.

“We are very excited by this new elective,” said Robert Li Kitts, MD, Course Director. “Not only will we highlight the importance of the health and well-being of LGBTQD patients, but also the importance of inter-disciplinary, inter-departmental, and inter-hospital collaboration to ensure a well-rounded clinical and scholarly experience.”

Medical students will also have the opportunity to engage in a scholarly endeavor related to LGBTQD health based on their individual interest. The endeavor could consist of an advocacy, public health, research, quality improvement and/or medical education project.  A product could be in the form of a poster, case report/publication, presentation/talk, and/or contribution to the curriculum.
